Caenn, Aeris and Garviel return to the Catacombs to find the entrance bricked up in an effort to keep them out; breaking a hole in the wall to crawl through they find the guards on the other side have been exsanguinated to a man.
Venturing deeper, they meet the remaining guards in battle. When the battle is almost over, Xaadu reappears, its veins flush with fresh blood, intent on feeding on the survivors. Once the Fleischguild are dispatched it turns on the party, attempting to drain Garviel.
Aeris, blinded again by the flesh curse, claws the skin from their own eyes before slicing Xaadu in half. The Heart of Haldicar falls to the ground. Aeris is drenched in blood. Aeris’ armour awakens, becoming enchanted by the exposure to the Heart and being bathed in the blood of the demon.
They return the Heart to Bar Saturn and then press on, discovering more evidence of the Fleischguild’s worship of the archon Malprion, Lord of organism. They face Amalkus once more, and find a group of wretched shades stumbling through the catacombs, carrying their own organs in jars - victims of sacrifice seeking rest. They promise them burial.
Caenn finds a book - Miracles Wrought in Flesh - and they attempt to reach the library again, but the guild has redoubled its guard, and the resistance is too heavy. Caenn remains adamant about returning his library book, but for now they return home.
As a result of defeating Szadu while wearing a splendid suit of leather, Aeris now has the Magical Reinforced Leather of the Heart.
Here we can see Ben L’s rules about magical items being created by using splendid (masterwork) items for great feats - slaying Xaadu upgraded Aeris’ armour. I was having fun with Diablo-style overdescriptive item titles at the time!
